Letters to the Editor: Potential pollution must be researched

Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor: Potential pollution must be researched November 7, 2026 2 min read Trending David Haugen Minot North American Iron (NAI) wants to transport their iron waste around 500 miles from Calumet, MN, to Minot, ND, to convert it into pig iron. The pig iron would again need to be transported to a steel manufacturing plant many miles away. NAI is willing to incur these transportation expenses because for some reason MN will not approve the processing of the iron waste in MN. NAI plans to develop a 2,400 acre site near Minot for this processing plant because Minot has access to abundant energy and water. NAI proposes 650 permanent jobs. Limited information was provided about the amount of pollution that would result as well as the amount of water that would be needed. If this processing plant would be such a positive development, why isn't it being developed in MN? It would require limited transportation costs and have ample water resources. It would be much cheaper to transport the required gas than the iron waste. Most likely, MN agencies would not readily approve this processing plant due to the pollution it would produce. Julie Reiten in her letter to the editor to MDN, October 31, indicated her concerns that this plant will damage the air quality in Minot. I share those concerns and am not satisfied with NAI's assurances that pollution concerns will be resolved or negligeable. If this project will be such a positive benefit to our community, why was it not publicized more and why isn't MN interested? Why are ND regulations so easier to meet than MN? Is our air quality less concerning or important to our citizens or public officials? This processing plant has a number of unknown pollution producing activities. The potential pollution production must be thoroughly researched and reviewed before the project is approved.
